In Huimin County, Binzhou City, there is a kind of clay that “speaks”. Sourced from the banks of the Yellow River, it is beaten, kneaded and carved into scenes of military reviews from The Art of War, performances of the Huji Folk Story‑telling Festival, and red memories of the Old Bohai Spirit. All these creations are the work of Hu Dongmei, the third‑generation inheritor of Hu‑style clay sculpture. For nearly forty years, she has upheld the craft passed down to her from her grandmother, breathing life into Huimin’s local culture within lumps of yellow clay.

Hu‑style clay sculpture dates back to Hu Dongmei’s grandmother, with a history of more than one hundred years.

According to Hu Dongmei, the clay used for Hu‑style clay sculpture comes from the Yellow River banks in Huimin. It boasts strong viscosity and excellent malleability. High‑quality clay requires fermentation for at least half a month. Insufficient fermentation will cause artworks to crack — this is the most crucial secret of the craft.

Unlike conventional clay sculpture, which largely relies on moulds and features limited themes, Hu‑style clay sculpture adheres to entirely hand‑made creation, yielding vivid and diversely shaped works. Breaking free from the constraints of traditional auspicious small ornaments, it innovates by drawing on Yellow River culture, Sun Tzu culture, the Huji Folk Story‑telling Festival and red culture. By refining facial expressions of figures and recreating real‑life scenes, the clay sculptures become warm cultural carriers.
